Apple Exploring AI Partnerships with Google and OpenAI for iPhone

Apple is in active talks with Google to potentially bring its Gemini generative AI to the iPhone, according to a Bloomberg report. The company has also considered using OpenAI's ChatGPT. This comes as Apple CEO Tim Cook recently confirmed plans to release AI features to customers later this year.
The AI capabilities built into Apple products could be powered by a mix of Apple's own models for on-device AI, and cloud-based AI through partnerships with companies like Google for features such as text and image generation. Google's AI already powers features on Samsung's Galaxy S23 phones and its own Pixel 7 devices.
Why It Matters: An Apple-Google AI deal would greatly expand the reach of Google's AI to over 2 billion iPhones globally. However, it may be seen as a concession that Apple's own generative AI efforts are behind the competition. Apple is testing an internal chatbot called Apple GPT and has a large language model known as Ajax, but they are reportedly less advanced than rival offerings.
Apple's existing $18 billion annual deal to make Google Search the iPhone default has faced regulatory scrutiny for potentially entrenching Google's market position. A further AI partnership could attract similar attention.
Waiting for WWDC: An announcement on any Apple-Google AI deal is unlikely before Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in June. In the meantime, Apple continues work on its own AI initiatives alongside exploring third-party partnerships to power the iPhone's AI future.
Apple's pursuit of AI partnerships signals the growing arms race among tech giants to make artificial intelligence a key selling point of their devices and services. As consumer demand for AI features grows, Apple wants to ensure the iPhone keeps pace, even if that means relying on the advanced AI capabilities of rivals Google and OpenAI.
