🔥Scientists discover first new class of antibiotics in over 60 years with the help of AI
Researchers have discovered a new class of antibiotics using an AI-powered approach, marking the first such finding in over six decades according to a study published in Nature. The development comes as global health experts sound alarms over rising antimicrobial resistance (AMR), warning it poses a major threat to modern medicine.
Led by scientists at MIT and Harvard, the team developed explainable deep learning models to efficiently screen over 12 million compounds for antibiotic activity. Their models analyzed molecular structures to identify common substructures, or "rationales", associated with drug activity.
Examining rationales revealed several putative structural classes of compounds with antibiotic properties. Empirical testing of 283 molecules confirmed one class selectively killed methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and other dangerous pathogens. Mice studies found a lead compound from this class reduced bacterial burdens in skin and thigh infection models.
The World Health Organization warns AMR was directly responsible for over 1 million deaths in 2019 according to recent estimates. As resistance grows, many infections are becoming harder or impossible to treat, increasing illness, disability and death worldwide. The emergence of drug-resistant "superbugs" also threatens modern medical advances reliant on antimicrobials.
Experts say the development pipeline for new antibiotics is critically low as resistance rises. The researchers hope their approach, which leverages AI to provide chemical insights, can help revitalize antibiotic discovery. By revealing rationales for drug activity, their models offer a path towards identifying entirely new structural classes with therapeutic potential.
The study highlights how AI is not only augmenting drug discovery toolkits, but also making those tools more intelligible. In the ongoing fight against AMR, such explainable models may help researchers not only find answers, but understand why certain solutions work.

Congress Introduces Bill to Increase Transparency of Large Language Models
A new bill introduced in the House of Representatives aims to shed more light on how influential AI systems are developed and used. The AI Foundation Model Transparency Act, introduced by Representative Don Beyer (D-VA), would establish standards for disclosing details about large language models and how they are trained.
As advanced AI systems like ChatGPT and DALL-E have seen widespread adoption, concerns have grown around a lack of transparency in how these models work. The bill directs the Federal Trade Commission to develop regulations requiring certain information be publicly disclosed by companies providing models that meet certain usage thresholds.
Specifically, the regulations would specify details that must be provided to the FTC and publicly disclosed regarding a model's training data, size and composition. Documentation around the model's intended uses and limitations would also be mandated. Additionally, performance on benchmark tasks and any audits would need to be reported.
The standards aim to address issues like the potential for models to spread misinformation or inaccurate inferences based on biases in their training. By shedding light on how models were developed, the goal is to help users make more informed decisions and help copyright owners enforce their rights.
While some companies have voluntarily provided more transparency into their models, the bill seeks to establish a consistent baseline. It also tasks the FTC with periodically updating the rules as AI capabilities evolve. Failure to comply with the regulations would be treated as an unfair practice under the FTC Act.
As large language models become ever more sophisticated, experts argue transparency will grow increasingly important. The bill offers a framework for governing next-generation AI and balancing its benefits with mitigating potential harms. Its passage could shape how companies develop and apply transformative technologies going forward.
Humane's AI Pin Smartwatch to Begin Shipping in March
Wearable technology startup Humane announced that its AI-powered wrist-worn device called the Ai Pin will begin shipping orders placed by early adopters starting in March 2023. The $699 Ai Pin aims to bring advanced AI assistance directly to the user's hands.
In a post on the X social network, Humane revealed that those who pre-ordered the Ai Pin by placing a "priority order" will be the first to receive their devices when shipments commence next March. The company plans to fulfill orders based on purchase date thereafter, sending units out according to when they were placed.
The Ai Pin resembles a lapel pin that attaches magnetically to clothing. At its center is a "Laser Ink Display" that projects menus, interfaces and other visuals using light projected onto the user's palm. Inputs are handled through gestures like tapping and pinching detected by onboard sensors.
Powering the device is an AI assistant called Ai Mic that supports voice commands, reminders, translation and more. Humane says Ai Mic was designed with a focus on privacy and does not collect or store personal data. Beyond AI functions, the Ai Pin also offers novel ways to control smart devices and media through gesture and voice controls.
Backed by a $24 monthly subscription, the Ai Pin aims to bring the omnipresent AI experience of devices like Star Trek's communicators to users' hands. With shipping slated to start in just a few months, Humane will soon face the real-world test of whether its vision translates successfully.
Microsoft launches dedicated Copilot app on Android
Microsoft has expanded access to its AI coding assistant Copilot with the release of a dedicated mobile app on Android. Previously only available through the Bing app, Copilot now has a standalone offering for Android users.
Announced quietly last week, the Copilot app appeared in the Google Play Store, allowing developers to utilize the AI model's programming capabilities without needing the Bing app. As noted by Neowin and confirmed by The Verge, the app mirrors the web and desktop Copilot experience.
This includes conversational access to Copilot's GPT-4 language model for drafting documents, emails and code. The app also integrates DALL-E 3 for image generation and provides free access to OpenAI's latest model architecture.
The standalone app format streamlines the Copilot experience on Android. Previously, users needed the Bing mobile app just to access the AI assistant's features. The Copilot domain also now hosts the service independent of Bing.
While an iOS version of the Copilot app has yet to surface, the app launch suggests Microsoft is moving the tool towards more self-contained offerings beyond its initial integration with Bing search. As AI assistants like Copilot and ChatGPT grow in popularity, dedicated mobile access will be key for adoption.
Google Achieves Major AI Milestones in 2023 While Navigating Workforce Impacts
2023 proved to be a landmark year for Google's artificial intelligence research and product development according to an analysis published on AI Insight Central Hub. The tech giant unveiled over 20 new AI-powered innovations and continued making strides in its AI capabilities. However, Google also faced significant workforce changes as automation begins replacing human roles at the company.
Some of Google's most notable AI releases this year included Imagen, a text-to-image generator; Bard, a conversational AI system capable of nuanced discussions; and MusicLM, a model that can generate original songs. The company also introduced new AI features across products like Google Maps, Gmail and Google Docs.
Underpinning these innovations is Google's extensive AI research division, which focuses on advancing techniques in natural language processing, computer vision, robotics and more. Teams like Google Brain design neural networks that power technologies like search and translation. Google shares many of its research findings through academic papers and open-source tools.
While AI automation delivers immense business value, it is also transforming Google's workflows and disrupting some employee roles. Reports emerged of plans to cut around 30,000 sales jobs as AI takes over ad generation and optimization tasks. Google will need to thoughtfully manage workforce transitions as it scales AI across operations.
As one of the foremost leaders in AI development, Google has a responsibility to pursue innovation responsibly. The company invests heavily in algorithms fairness, privacy, transparency and safety research to help guide the technology's development and adoption. If Google sustains focus on responsible practices, it can help deliver on AI's promise to benefit society.
