🔥Microsoft's Next Surface Laptops to Integrate Powerful AI Features
In a move that could significantly advance the capabilities of Windows PCs, Microsoft is reportedly gearing up to launch AI-enhanced Surface devices in 2023. According to a report from Windows Central, the upcoming Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 will come equipped with dedicated neural processing hardware and software to unlock new AI-driven experiences.
Citing unnamed sources, Windows Central revealed Microsoft plans Qualcomm's high-powered Snapdragon X chips to power Arm-based variants of the Surface laptops and tablet. Codenamed "CADMUS", these devices are said to be optimized for running AI features in a future Windows release.
Alongside upgraded performance and battery life on par with Apple silicon PCs, the Arm models will offer dedicated AI acceleration. Meanwhile, Intel versions will use the latest 14th-gen Core processors.
But what exactly will these AI capabilities enable? The report states Microsoft aims to integrate its Copilot coding assistant directly through dedicated keyboard shortcuts. Users would simply press a button to access the AI tool's programming assistance.
Both Surface devices are also rumored to gain brighter, thinner displays with HDR and anti-glare coatings. The Surface Pro may see a resolution bump and rounded corners akin to Surface Studio models as well.
If accurate, Microsoft's plans would deliver the most advanced Surface hardware yet - putting dedicated AI processing directly in the hands of consumers and professionals for the first time. Only a 2023 launch will reveal if Microsoft can realize this vision.
Samsung Upgrades Smart Fridge with Powerful Onboard AI Capabilities
Major appliance maker Samsung revealed plans to debut an enhanced smart fridge lineup at next year's CES featuring new AI-driven functionality. According to a report from The Verge, the 2024 Bespoke 4-Door Flex Refrigerator with AI Family Hub+ will include computer vision and personalized recipe recommendation features powered by on-device artificial intelligence.
A key upgrade is the addition of an internal camera that can identify individual food items stored in the fridge. Through computer vision and Samsung's Vision AI technology, the camera will recognize up to 33 food types without an internet connection.
The fridge's AI is also integrated into Samsung's Food app accessible directly on a new 32-inch touchscreen display. Here, the AI can generate customized recipe suggestions based on the foods detected in the fridge and a user's dietary preferences logged in Samsung Health.
Additional smarts include manually entering expiration dates viewable before items go bad, and a reported upgrade to the touchscreen with thinner bezels and possibly rounded corners. Compatible mobile devices can also mirror their screens to control the fridge interface remotely.
Samsung plans to showcase the AI-driven appliances, codenamed "CADMUS," at CES 2023 in January. They are said to offer a more seamless AI-centric kitchen experience compared to earlier smart fridge models. With new on-device AI processing, Samsung could be redefining what's possible for intelligent appliances.
Researchers Develop Breakthrough Brain-Computer Interface Using AI
In a major advancement, researchers from the University of Technology Sydney have created a portable system that can decode silent thoughts and translate brain activity into text using artificial intelligence.
Dubbed "DeWave", the technology uses an EEG cap to non-invasively record electrical signals from the brain. An AI model then analyzes the brainwave patterns to segment them into discrete units representing words, sentences or concepts.
Through testing with 29 participants, DeWave demonstrated an ability to translate thoughts into accurate written language in real-time. It surpassed previous benchmarks for brain-computer interfaces and required no additional aids like eye tracking.
According to a report from CyberGuy on Fox News, DeWave opens new possibilities for assistive technologies and human-machine interaction. Its high accuracy and portability mean it could aid communication for those unable to speak verbally, like through illness, injury or disability.
The researchers now aim to improve the technology's translation scores closer to 90% accuracy levels seen in speech recognition. They also plan to explore DeWave's applications across domains from controlling robots to enhancing virtual assistants.
As one of the first technologies to incorporate discrete encoding for neural decoding, DeWave represents an innovative approach at the intersection of neuroscience and artificial intelligence. Its release signifies notable progress in the quest to directly decode human thoughts.
Microsoft launches dedicated Copilot app on Android
Microsoft has expanded access to its AI coding assistant Copilot with the release of a dedicated mobile app on Android. Previously only available through the Bing app, Copilot now has a standalone offering for Android users.
Announced quietly last week, the Copilot app appeared in the Google Play Store, allowing developers to utilize the AI model's programming capabilities without needing the Bing app. As noted by Neowin and confirmed by The Verge, the app mirrors the web and desktop Copilot experience.
This includes conversational access to Copilot's GPT-4 language model for drafting documents, emails and code. The app also integrates DALL-E 3 for image generation and provides free access to OpenAI's latest model architecture.
The standalone app format streamlines the Copilot experience on Android. Previously, users needed the Bing mobile app just to access the AI assistant's features. The Copilot domain also now hosts the service independent of Bing.
While an iOS version of the Copilot app has yet to surface, the app launch suggests Microsoft is moving the tool towards more self-contained offerings beyond its initial integration with Bing search. As AI assistants like Copilot and ChatGPT grow in popularity, dedicated mobile access will be key for adoption.
AI Advances Help Retailers Reduce Waste from Product Returns
As the volume of online shopping returns continues to surge, retailers are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence to more efficiently process returned goods. According to an article from Semafor, AI-powered solutions can help cut down on waste from the tidal wave of items being shipped back from consumers.
Returns management has emerged as a major sustainability challenge for e-commerce companies. Most returned products ultimately end up in landfills due to high processing costs. But new software is aiming to change that dynamic. Tools from companies like Optoro utilize computer vision and machine learning to better identify, sort and route returned items.
By aggregating shipments of like items headed to the same warehouse, AI can streamline transportation. Its image recognition capabilities also assist workers in sorting returns to maximize the chances of reselling goods. Additionally, AI provides analytics on reasons for returns to offer tailored guidance to future shoppers.
Some retailers have also launched "second chance stores" to resell returned products marked as used. Amazon claims the majority of returns to its warehouses can be resold as new, with 30% finding homes as used items on its Amazon Warehouse platform.
While limiting return policies could help curb waste, that runs counter to online retailers' imperative of easy returns. AI may offer a middle path, helping to process volumes more efficiently and get more goods back on shelves rather than in landfills. As returns continue mounting, such solutions are poised to play an growing sustainability role.
