🔥Pulitzer Power Play: Literary Giants Take on AI Titans in Copyright Clash
Big names in literature are shaking up the AI world. Michael Chabon and Ayelet Waldman, both wielding Pulitzer Prizes, are spearheading a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft. Why? Their beef is with their stories being used as AI brain food without a please or thank you.
In a California court, they're pointing fingers at AI models like GPT-3 and ChatGPT, claiming these digital geniuses are dining out on their creative works. OpenAI and Microsoft counter with a 'we don't memorize, we learn' defense. But the authors aren’t buying it, worried their brainchildren (read: characters and plots) might get lost in the AI shuffle.
It's more than just a spat over stories; it's a head-scratcher about AI's role in the future of creativity. Will AI be a partner in art, or is it crossing the line? This legal showdown might just sketch the blueprint for AI's play nice policy with creative content. Stay tuned – and click here for the full drama.
Google's 2023 Tech Tango: AI, Android, and Pixels Galore!
Google's been cooking up some serious tech magic in 2023, and it's not just about search engines anymore. First up, meet Gemini, the AI brainiac that's redefining 'smart' in smartphones and beyond. This AI whiz is juggling text, audio, video, and code, making your gadgets smarter than ever.
Then there's Bard, Google's answer to chatty AIs. It's not just a talker; it's a doer, expanding its skills across Google's vast universe. Think of Bard as that super-smart friend who's also a little show-offy.
The Search game's got a new player too: the Search Generative Experience. It's like having an AI detective that digs up the most relevant info in a snap. Google's making sure you spend less time searching, more time finding.
But wait, there's more! Android 14 dropped and it's not just another update. It's a customizing powerhouse, letting you tweak your phone's look and feel like never before. Plus, it's got new health and security features, because who doesn't like a phone that cares?
And the grand finale: Pixel's new family members. The Pixel Fold's making a bold entrance as the first foldable phone from Google, and the Pixel 8 series is redefining smartphone photography. They're not just phones; they're your AI-powered sidekicks.
2023's been a wild ride at Google, and it's just the beginning. Stay tuned, tech aficionados! For more info click here
OpenAI Gets Proactive on AI Safety
As ChatGPT and other powerful AI models continue to push boundaries, their developer OpenAI is taking proactive steps to guide development responsibly. This week, the company released a "Preparedness Framework" aimed at tracking, evaluating and mitigating catastrophic risks that advanced AI could potentially pose.
The "living document" framework lays out OpenAI's process for risk assessment and oversight. A dedicated team will conduct research and evaluations, while a Safety Advisory Group provides leadership with risk analysis and counsel. Models will be ranked on factors like cybersecurity, persuasion and CBRN threats to determine if further progress is prudent.
Experts praise the framework as a worthwhile effort, if maintained diligently over time. As Johns Hopkins Institute co-director Anton Dahbura commented, "This should not be looked at as a box-checking exercise." With AI systems like ChatGPT introducing uncertainty, proactive risk guidance is important complement to their benefits.
As the first detailed plan of its kind, OpenAI's framework sets an example. But fully addressing AI's complex challenges will require sustained effort across developers, regulators and other stakeholders. For now, the "Preparedness Framework" demonstrates OpenAI's commitment to navigating AI development responsibly and transparently.

AI Dataset Draws Scrutiny Over Harmful Images
A popular dataset used to train AI image generators contained thousands of links to child sexual abuse material (CSAM), according to researchers at Stanford.
The LAION-5B dataset, which powers models like Stable Diffusion, was found to have indexed over 1,600 illegal images scraped from the open web. While the dataset itself does not store images, its inclusion of CSAM identifiers likely exposed AI systems to inappropriate content during training.
Stanford researchers began combing through LAION-5B in September after previous concerns around its inclusion of pornographic and racist content. They verified CSAM images using hash matching platforms before notifying authorities.
While AI creators insist trained models are not directly influenced by training data, experts say there is still a risk of harmful content influencing outputs. Stanford recommends deprecated models like Stable Diffusion 1.5 that relied on LAION-5B.
As AI language models grow increasingly capable, ensuring the data behind them avoids illegal or unethical material becomes ever more important. This incident highlights the oversight needed to build AI systems responsibly.

AI Makes Progress on Unsolved Math Problem
In a first, AI has generated new insights into an open mathematical problem that has long eluded human solvers. Researchers from DeepMind developed a system called FunSearch that was able to improve the lower bound for a problem inspired by the card game Set.
FunSearch works by automatically generating short computer programs through a specially trained language model. It then quickly tests the programs' solutions against known bounds. On the "cap set problem" for dimension 8, FunSearch exceeded what mathematicians had achieved so far.
The FunSearch approach models a new type of human-AI collaboration. Rather than replacing mathematicians, the system acts as a "force multiplier" by producing programs for people to analyze and learn from. One researcher said seeing the successful programs is most exciting for revealing new modes of partnership between humans and machines.
While not proving its solutions are optimal, FunSearch showcases AI's potential to advance open problems. Its combination of automated program generation and rapid testing could inspire new tools for pushing mathematical frontiers.
